Gabi’s Story
Gabi’s Grounds started in 2017 when Gabi had a part time job bagging groceries at Harris Teeter she wanted another part time job, so she started applying for many jobs. For example she was turned down at a popular gym to be a child care helper, even though she worked at our church in the child ministry area for years, and the kids adored her. The last interview where she was turned down from was the position of making smoothies, during the interview they proceeded to tell her that she would be too slow at the job and they didn’t want customers waiting, to which Gabi replied, well you haven’t even tried me behind the counter, how do you know I would be too slow? That was it for me, I couldn’t put my daughter through any more rejections. She didn’t understand why nobody wanted to hire her. Neither did I, but I did know we couldn’t do this anymore, that’s when Gabi’s Grounds Coffee was born.
We traveled to the beach to visit Bitty and Beau’s Coffee shop where they were the first coffee shop to employ people with special abilities. Gabi always wanted to own her own restaurant so I told her I could do a coffee shop instead and she said let’s do it! For the next 3 years we raised money, we did pop ups all over NC, Gabi spoke at special needs conferences across the country about Achieving your dreams. Our garage was full of coffee and merchandise, and we shipped everything out from our home. We had tons of orders after being on the Kelly Clarkson show in 2020. Then Covid hit…..
God called us out of my garage and into the co warehouse at the loading dock. I said to Him, you know theres a pandemic going on right?? People are going home to work…… We rented a small warehouse space at the Loading Dock in Raleigh, NC. As I stood in our “Cage” (chain linked 10×20 spot) I watched as others using the coworking tables out in the main warehouse were packaging, assembling, labeling items for other companies, and realized this is what God wanted me to see. So we pivoted from looking for a coffee shop, (still have online and pop up coffee) and stared Gabi’s PALS (Packaging, Assembling, Labeling and Shipping)
We currently have 42 employees! We travel to customers warehouses and work there if preferred or we work out of the Loading Dock warehouse.
